When moving with children of any age, where they will attend school is an important element of their adjustment, but it isn’t the only factor for their continued growth.
Create a strong foundation for success by nurturing the whole child…body, mind, heart and soul.
Pillar 1: Nurture the Soul – Focus on Family. The emotional stability of a loving family is one of the most important elements for a child’s successful adjustment. Make time to gather as a family every day to celebrate successes and listen to concerns.
Pillar 2: Nurture the Heart – Form New Friendships. Every child’s social development is supported by interaction with other children and with adults who care about them. Find bonding opportunities through playdates, interaction with other families, and community activities. If spiritual life is important to your family, connecting with a local house of worship in your faith tradition will help relationship formation.
Pillar 3: Nurture the Mind – Keep Learning. Complementing the intellectual development provided by schools is possible through before- and after-school programs (language programs, music, theatre, art, problem-solving experiences, etc.) Ask teachers and school counselors for recommendations, or check offerings at the public library.
Pillar 4: Nurture the Body – Be Active. Physical activity releases mood-improving endorphins. Identify physical movement opportunities that fit best with your child’s interests, be it ballet or basketball. Bonus! Family-friendly recreation centers can provide support in both social and physical development.
